The Odyssey, released in 2002, contains the title tune Odyssey, five original  tunes and two rock standards.

The CD was recorded and engineered by Paul Hamann at Suma Recording Studio.  Tom Fries directed the College of Wooster Percussion Ensemble and helped produce the CD along with the Kevin Reed Band.

The title track, Odyssey, is a rock suite for percussion ensemble and is performed by the Kevin Reed Band and the College of Wooster Percussion Ensemble. It was written by Kevin M. Reed, a percussionist and traumatic brain injury survivor and musically describes in four movements, Kevin’s injury, coma, rehabilitation and celebration of life.  The first and second movements, "Injury" and "Coma", are percussive in nature, augmented by prerecorded sound effects.  "Coma" ends with a piano melody written and played by Craig Reed, Kevin's brother, who expresses the excruciatingly slow process of waking up from a coma.  "Rehabilitation" the third movement features Kevin on drums and Craig on piano marching through endless years of physical, occupational and speech therapy sessions, not without setbacks.  The Kevin Reed Band joins in the explosive fourth movement, "Celebration of Life."

Kevin was working on commercial farm property during spring break in 1994, when a co-worker toppled a tree that crushed Kevin's skull and spine. Declared a dead man - too severely injured for doctors to complete the surgery the evening he was lifeflighted - Kevin defied the odds repeatedly during his 75-day coma. Not only did he surprise the doctors by awakening, but he went on to conquer relearning how to: breath, talk, think, stand, read, write, and move his paralyzed arm and leg. Music was never lost, and Kevin tapped out rhythms on the brace that encased his broken spine long before he was able to talk. Close friend and Conductor, Thomas Fries has been a mentor and friend to Kevin throughout his rehabilitation and served as composition advisor for Odyssey. And now, after more than 2500 therapy sessions and daily enjoyment of music, laughter, and God, Kevin transcends his disability and shares with us his inspiring Odyssey through life.

I lie in bed,

unraveling dreams

But life remains

a mystery

I toss and turn

a voice is heard

To take a wild

odyssey

The way is steep

the shadows dark

The questions shout

uncertainty

Do not give up

we’re almost there

We’re ridin’ out

this odyssey

The CD is rounded out with the Kevin Reed Band playing three original tunes written by Neil Bartos, two tunes written by Craig Reed and two bluesy-rock standards.
